Course Description
EMDR Basic Training Part 1: The Fundamentals

Course Description
EMDR therapy is a comprehensive psychotherapy approach that treats a broad range of clinical issues in a variety of different contexts. From a brief intervention to a longer-term therapy that treats difficulties in self-esteem, relationships and affect regulation, EMDR addresses anything based in memory. Guided by the Adaptive Information Processing model, EMDR identifies and treats past experiences informing current problems. Using the three-pronged approach of past, present and future, EMDR reprocesses early memories that set the foundation for a client’s current difficulties, ensuring that the present-day situations are no longer disturbing, and establishing alternative ways of thinking, feeling and responding more adaptively in the future.
Learning Objectives
  • Describe the evolution of EMDR therapy from its inception to present time.
  • Identify the components of the Three-Pronged Approach of EMDR therapy.
  • Identify a possible neurobiological mechanism of action that explains how change takes place.
  • Identify one or more social experiences or conditions that can contribute to racial or intergenerational trauma.
  • Describe how to offer informed consent for EMDR therapy to a new client.
  • Define the core element of dual attention.
  • Apply Safe Calm Place/State as a preparation for trauma processing.
  • Identify the three clinical themes to better understand a client’s emotional confusion as it relates to their issue.
  • Name the 8 phases of EMDR therapy for comprehensive treatment.
  • Apply the Reevaluation phase to better understand the client’s changes and determine next steps.
  • Identify at least 2 reasons where memory reprocessing may be contraindicated.
  • Apply principles of the AIP model to case conceptualization and treatment planning with a client.
  • Apply the procedural steps in the Assessment phase using the script to set up a memory for reprocessing.
  • Apply one or more strategies when reprocessing is blocked.
  • Use one or more strategies to bring closure to a reprocessing session.
  • Administer sets of bilateral stimulation (BLS) with a client.

How is The Center's Basic EMDR Training structured?

Our Basic Training is organized into Part I & Part II.

Part I is typically offered over three consecutive days on Fridays-Sundays or Wednesdays-Fridays with variable start times to accommodate different time zones.

Part II is offered over five days - three consecutive days on Wednesdays-Fridays or Fridays-Sundays, and one month later, two days on Thursdays and Fridays, or Fridays-Saturdays, also with variable start times.

Each training segment includes a didactic portion with lecture, discussion, and videotape demonstrations of EMDR skills and concepts.

Trainees will practice EMDR methods with one another using real life issues as a way to learn the process as well as to understand it from a client's point of view.

There is a case consultation component included in each training segment where trainees will learn to apply EMDR therapy with their clients as they learn.

There are three, 2-hour, post-training case consultation sessions included in the Part II to help you fully integrate what you're learning.

Additionally, trainees can drop in on a monthly, 60-minute Q & A session with Founder and Director, Deany Laliotis while you are enrolled in the training.

The Center's EMDR Therapy Basic Training is a 6-month process that you can purchase as a bundle or schedule at your convenience — because we are committed to providing you with a solid foundation in the core elements of this powerful methodology.
