G-TEP Expands the Reach of EMDR Early Intervention
G-TEP (Group Traumatic Episode Protocol) expands the reach of EMDR Early Intervention (EEI), especially when resources to treat large numbers of individuals following a traumatic episode are limited. Adapted from R-TEP (Recent Traumatic Events Protocol) developed for use with individuals, G-TEP makes it possible to treat everyone simultaneously for acute exposure to one or more traumatic experiences and ongoing traumatic stress. It can also be applied with individual clients who struggle with putting words to their experience or prefer not to share details.
G-TEP is considered guided self-help so any number of individuals can work simultaneously on a shared or discrete trauma. They process the trauma as they experienced it and in their own terms.
G-TEP uses an art therapy format so clients represent their experience of the trauma episode visually with no verbal articulation of traumatic material. Thanks to simultaneous processing in a group format and visual-only representations of the trauma, G-TEP offers emotional safety as well as powerful benefits by:
- Avoiding the potential of vicarious traumatization and shame-based exposure for clients
- Sidestepping language issues with immigrants and refugees as well as with children, teens and anyone who struggles with expressive language
- Accommodating diversity among group participants, so you can use it with different people in various settings
- De-stigmatizing mental health services with groups whose culture may carry negative perceptions of therapy.
What If EMDR Processing Is Not Possible Right Away?
G-REP (Group Resource Enhancement Protocol) is designed to provide relief and stability when internal and/or external resources for processing are limited. You'll learn how to use this extended resource-only intervention with all clients and groups. Adapted from G-TEP, G-REP was first developed by Dr. Maria Masciandaro to meet the needs of refugees from Ukraine whose situations were acute, ongoing, and unpredictable. You'll learn to use G-REP as an early intervention following a recent traumatic event to guide the individual or group to connect with their own inner resources, bolstering resilience and providing sufficient stability and relief until trauma processing becomes an option.
