Treating Complex Trauma & Dissociative Symptoms: Navigating Parts of Self Using EMDR Therapy
with special guest Roger Solomon, Ph.D.
The heart of EMDR therapy is about the transformation of painful and confusing memories, promoting psychological health and healing. Guided by the Adaptive Information Processing Model (AIP), EMDR successfully treats a broad range of disorders, to include more severe forms of complex trauma and dissociation. Clients who live further out on the continuum of trauma can be better understood by integrating the theory of The Structural Dissociation of the Personality (TDSP) into an EMDR framework. This phase-oriented approach will enable you to safely approach the client's internal system, while encouraging cooperation and collaboration among parts throughout the process. You’ll walk away with a conceptual map as well as specific clinical strategies to help you navigate this enigmatic territory of the human psyche.

Travel in Trauma Time
This training will integrate a phase-oriented approach, using the precepts of The Theory of Structural dissociation to enable the EMDR therapist to effectively navigate working with parts of self within an AIP framework. Learning objectives will be clearly outlined and illustrated by client videotape footage of actual sessions. Through lecture, discussion, videotape review, and a small practice segment, participants will be able to:
- Identify the components of a phase-oriented approach and how to integrate it into an EMDR framework
- Describe the precepts of The Theory of Structural Dissociation (TTSD) and how it informs AIP case conceptualization
- Implement at least two clinical interventions with parts of self to increase integrative capacity
- Apply at least two specific strategies to facilitate reprocessing and help manage the client's Window of Tolerance
- Apply resourcing and Meeting Place strategies to promote cooperation and collaboration between parts of self
- Modify some of the procedures of the Standard Protocol of EMDR as indicated with clients who exhibit dissociative symptoms
