Relational EMDR Therapy: From Treatment to Transformation

Relational EMDR focuses on the Self of the therapist as the interplay between therapist and client take center stage in this relational approach to treating developmental trauma. In this practice-based training, we'll take a deeper dive into our own foundational attachment experiences that can inform our moments of collision in therapy with our clients, clearing the way for repair and transformation.

Overview

Relational EMDR Therapy℠ uses the relationship between therapist and client as a central element to help clients who struggle with low self-esteem, relationships, and self-regulation by actively accompanying them on their journey towards healing. This parallel process is a memory-in-the-making for therapists and clients alike, making it a shared experience beyond the resolution of the traumatic memories the client is reprocessing.  The Self of the therapist plays an integral role in the client's healing journey as is considered an active ingredient in creating the conditions that make it possible for our clients to "go there."  So the question we pose as relational EMDR therapists isn't "is the client ready," but, "are we ready to embark on this journey together?"

Here's what Tom has to say about Deany's relational work:

Deany's experience and knowledge base of EMDR therapy, combined with her ability to teach complex theory in a manner which is easily accessible makes her, in my mind, the best EMDR therapy trainer that I have had. She integrates the relational component of attachment theory into an EMDR framework and in doing so, has helped me bring my best self to this work. Deany has successfully moved EMDR away from being simply a technique to being an integrative psychotherapy in its own right. To quote Deany, “It is the therapeutic relationship which creates the conditions for change, EMDR therapy is the method we use.”
